In the 2012 academic year, University of Yamanashi was granted with the “Research Activities Support Subsidy Program for Female Researchers,” a fund granted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for the development of human resources.

In the Faculty of Engineering, at least one female researcher who was either an associate professor or a researcher of a higher position existed in each department. The ratio of female teaching staff in the field of engineering was as high as 7.4%, a considerably high standard within the nation. However, after the staff reorganization in the 2012 academic year, a number of female researchers moved to the Faculty of Life and Environmental Science, leaving some of the departments in the Faculty of Engineering without a female researcher.

Taking this situation seriously, certain actions were taken to reverse the imbalance of the female researchers in the Faculty of Engineering to a state prior to the reorganization. . With this in mind, the University aimed to “place at least one or more female professors/associate professors in each faculty within the Department of Engineering, which now has the lowest ratio of female researchers,” and “to mark an average of 15% adoption rate of female researchers when hiring new personnel who are to replace those who are retiring in the 2014 academic year and the next 5 years that follows. A support system that assists female researchers who are facing significant life events (pregnancy, childbirth, childcare, long-term care for elderlies, etc.) was organized, and an improvement within the campus environment was made by providing opportunities to interact with one another and to exchange information. As a result, these measures helped to promote a better work-life balance for women. In October, 2012, the “Support Office for Female Researchers” was established within the Kofu campus to work on a way to better exchange information with the local community.

As an organization under the immediate control of the Dean, University of Yamanashi’s “Support Office for Female Researchers” has continued working in many ways to accomplish its goals. The result of such activities has been acknowledged to be an effective means to accelerate the promotion of gender equality, ultimately leading to an enhancement in the school’s functions. When activities ended in January, 2015, the “Support Office for Female Researchers” made a proposal to become the Gender Equality Office, and prepared itself to continue the activities to increase female researchers.
